External Experts from Africa Visit the Centre of Excellence for Mining, Environmental Engineering and Resource Management (CEMEREM)

CEMEREM, through its exchange programme, offers diverse knowledge and fosters scientific and cultural exchange between partners. The 2022 MSc in Mining and Environmental Engineering students have had an opportunity to learn from two experts from Southern Africa, Dr. Jibril Abdulsalam and Dr Moshood Onifade for two (2) weeks, beginning 28th November to 18th December 2022. The visit is aimed at advancing expertise in educational and research portfolios in the School of Mines and Engineering (SME) at Taita Taveta University (TTU).

Dr. Moshood Onifade is a Senior Lecturer from the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, University of Namibia. He is internationally recognized for his impactful research in Mining Engineering and interdisciplinary studies. With nine (9) years of academic experience and six (6) years of professional experience, his visit as an expert in Mine Ventilation and Environmental Management, Mining Law, Health and Safety was instrumental to the MSc. Mining Engineering students. Dr. Moshood has previously supported the School through postgraduate supervision and thesis examination.

Dr Jibril Abdulsalam is a Carnegie Research Fellow, and a Senior Lecturer from the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He is specialized in the development of friendly porous material for sustainable gas and energy storage. His research interests are Electrochemical Energy Storage (Na-Ion batteries and supercapacitors) design; Synthesis and characterization of porous functional materials for gas (Methane and Hydrogen) storage applications, separation processes and advanced water treatment; and biomass processing and conversion. He has been supporting the School through the examination of theses. His stay at TTU has benefitted the postgraduate students in both MSc Mining and Environmental Engineering programmes. Particularly, he delivered lectures in petroleum engineering and air quality modelling.
